Moving from 1.4 x 10⁴ to Integers

First, we reviewed the practice work from last night and solving 2 word problems.

Next, we moved to working with integers:

HOMEWORK:   None for tonight.

More Practice with Scientific Notation

After whole class practice in computing with numbers of different scientific notations, students worked at their individual level on IXL.

HOMEWORK:   Make sure the 4-Block sheet is finished by tomorrow.

Add and Subtract Scientific Notation -- Day 2

Today's notes:

Additional practice was provided in class to help with the understanding of balancing and the use of product of powers property with scientific notation.

HOMEWORK:  None for tonight.

Adding and Subtracting with Scientific Notation

After reviewing writing and comparing numbers written in scientific notation, brainstormed some real world instances of when we may encounter extreme numbers.  (Add to your notes if you don't have these):

Then, we began adding and subtracting numbers using scientific notation.  (See notes)

Hidden Secret

First, we reviewed ME#3 and the examined the required components to each question. Make ups can be done sometime this week. I will be staying after school till 4:30 on Tuesday (or Wednesday - pending the storm) this week for anyone who wishes to stay. Grades close on Friday of this week.

Over the weekend, I was searching TED Talk to add to the next math unit and accidently ran across a video titled, "Math is the Hidden Secret to Understanding the World."  The speaker bases his topic on an interesting "perspective" and includes amazing mathematical visuals. I've attached link for reviewing.  TED Talk   Enjoy!

HOMEWORK:  None for tonight.

Scientific Notation

Today's activity focused on the purpose of using scientific notation. First, students examined how to rewrite a text message in shortened form using acronyms and abbreviations. Second, students took turns with partners reading very large or very small (extreme) numbers; experiencing the cumbersomeness of such numbers. Finally, after viewing the class video, students rewrote the same set of numbers using scientific notation.

2.   Scientific Notation -- Why U

3.   Kahn Academy Scientific Notation Examples

HOMEWORK:  No written work for tonight!  However, it would be an advantage for you to re-watch the class video and watch one or more of the "Other Videos."  Enjoy your weekend.

Mini-Eval #3

Our time during the B-Block class focused on the Mini-Evaluation. Some students did not finish and they will be given more time tomorrow (or Thursday, pending storm and school cancellation).

HOMEWORK:  Complete #21 in your MTN for Wednesday.

Pythagorean Game

Welcome to wacky winter weather!  Students reviewed for the Mini-Evaluation #3 via a Pythagorean Theorem Board Game.

HOMEWORK

  • Complete #21 in your MTN before Wednesday, 1/18/17
  • Mini-Eval #3 has been postponed to Tuesday, 1/17/17: Squares, roots, exponents and Pythagorean Theorem.

January 11, 2017

Mini-Eval #3 Preparation

Students completed the hands-on activity that demonstrated the converse of Pythagorean. We then moved to solving problems and applying the converse. This also acted as a review for Mini-Evaluation #3.

Another problem:

HOMEWORK

  • Complete #21 in your MTN before Wednesday, 1/18/17
  • DUE to tomorrow’s ski team meet, the Monday holiday, and a special schedule on Tuesday --  Mini-Eval #3 has been postponed to Wednesday, 1/18/17: Squares, roots, exponents and Pythagorean Theorem.

Converse of Pythagorean -- Defining and Testing

As students shared their responses to the homework review, it was cool to observe the strategies and discussion points from the students. Responses for 9 & 11:

The completion of higher level problem solving:

Today, students defined the "converse" of Pythagorean as follows:

Tomorrow, we will continue with "testing" the converse.

HOMEWORK:  None, but we will be having a Mini-Eval toward the end of the week.

Proving Pythagorean -- Day 3

Students sharing their homework results:

We also worked on some problems that involve higher level problem solving strategies and when students answer successfully indicate their ability to demonstrate "progressing with distinction." Answers will be posted on Monday.

HOMEWORK:  Complete numbers 9 & 11 in your MTN for Monday.
