Today's activity focused on the purpose of using scientific notation. First, students examined how to rewrite a text message in shortened form using acronyms and abbreviations. Second, students took turns with partners reading very large or very small (extreme) numbers; experiencing the cumbersomeness of such numbers. Finally, after viewing the class video, students rewrote the same set of numbers using scientific notation.
